From October 25 to 28, 2023, the 5th Biennial Conference of the African Studies Association of Africa (ASAA) will be held in Lubumbashi, DRC. The theme chosen for this edition is Rapatrier l’Afrique: Problématiques anciennes, perspectives critiques! The conference is organized in Lubumbashi by the Arrupe Center for Research and Training (CARF), University New Horizons (UNH) and Centre d’Art Waza.

The African Studies Association of Africa (https://as-aa.org) is organizing its 5th biennial conference in Lubumbashi, DRC. During this celebration of its 10th anniversary, ASAA will host the International Congress of African and African Diaspora Studies (ICAADS) (https://icaadscongress.com). Conferences will be held at two different sites, at CARF and UNH.
UNH (https://www.unhorizons.org) 2465, Route Kasapa, Gambela, Lubumbashi Buses will be available to shuttle participants between the two venues, which are only 15 minutes’ drive apart.
The online registration form that will also include information related to your diet restrictions will be available online from July 15, 2023. Full conference registration fee payment covers:

For Congolese participants, academics will pay a preferential fee of 150 USD and 80 USD for the students. African students who submitted an abstract can also apply for scholarship to attend the conference should they need financial help.

Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay in the DRC. The expiry date of the passport must be at least six (6) months prior to the date of travel. Visa requirements must be confirmed with the diplomatic representation of your country of departure. Participants traveling with a national passport are advised to obtain a visa for the DRC prior to departure.
All participants MUST HAVE:
letters of invitation from the host institution.
return tickets to their country of residence; and
proof that they have sufficient funds for their stay.
Please note that you can obtain a visa application form for the DRC from the diplomatic representation of the DRC in your country.
Please also note that participants requiring a visa on arrival (those who do not have a DRC embassy in their country) can obtain one. Be in touch with our assistant and expect more information on this.
Each participant should send the biographical data pages of his or her passport to the Local Organizing Committee by e-mail to assistantdirection@gmail.com to help with invitation letters.
Don’t forget to take your certificate of vaccination against YELLOW FEVER with you. It is required for all participants to enter and leave the DRC. Please note that the yellow fever vaccination certificate is valid for ten (10) days from the date of vaccination or, in the case of revaccination, from the date of revaccination. In addition, participants may be subject to further medical examination, including for Ebola and other communicable diseases, on arrival in the DRC; participants may be subject to health surveillance during their stay in the country. All other health-related protocols, including COVID-19 vaccination requirements for international travelers, must be complied with.
Letters of invitation signed jointly by the President of the ASAA, and the Rector of New Horizons University will be sent to each participant to facilitate the obtaining of visas.
Participants are responsible for their own travel to and from the DRC, as well as for their own accommodation, additional meals, and all other hotel expenses (laundry, telephone calls, secretarial services, etc.) during their stay in Lubumbashi. ASAA assumes no responsibility for unpaid bills. Lunch and coffee breaks are organized by the Conference. Vouchers will be distributed to all participants to have access to these services.
The conference will be held in French and English. Simultaneous translation will be available during the plenary sessions. Participants will be encouraged to choose panels and workshops following both their research interest and the availability of the interpretation in breakup sessions.
Please note that flights to Lubumbashi, DRC, arrive via Luano International Airport in Lubumbashi. The airport is 12.6 kms from the city center, less than 30-minute cab ride. Participants will be met on arrival at the arrival by the conference protocol service.
Please provide your flight details to the Local Organizing Committee well in advance so that the necessary transport arrangements can be made in time.
Before the conference, documents will be shared with all registered participants. They will also be put online for everyone on the Conference website. It is therefore important that all participants make every effort to register on time.
